Rawmarsh Community School: Securing S106 funding for Game-Changing School Expansion

Modular is a game-changer

Timeline

  • Early 2021: S2e helps Rawmarsh secure £900,000 of local authority funding

  • July 2021: Work begins on the site with S2e project managing the project

  • Autumn/Winter 2021: Pupils move into their new classroom block

The Issue – A Race for Space

Our academy school, which is a member of the Wickersley Partnership Trust, was oversubscribed, with pressure on places set to increase further in the next few years.

With the help of S2e, we secured funding from Rotherham Metropolitan Borough Council to replace the old 1960s ROSLA block with a new, purpose-built classroom building. The funding was enough for five classrooms, so we decided to invest our own money to add five more and really make a difference to the school, to meet growing demand.

The Solution – Thinking inside the box

Through the use of a modular building, S2e came up with a split design featuring a two-storey classroom building and an additional single-storey flexible space we can use for dining, music, drama and more. We have a fantastic new building in bright contemporary colours.

S2e liaised directly with the local authority to secure funding, carried out the design work and project managed the whole job. Their expertise solved numerous challenges:

  • Selecting contractors to the right budget thanks to long-standing relationships and industry knowledge

  • Meeting onerous planning requirements relating to nearby homes

  • Clever design to overcome the difficulties presented by our sloping site.

The Outcome

We've been working with S2e for eight years since we first became an Academy and the difference they've helped us make has been unbelievable. From new roofs and windows to achieving this latest step, they have been with us throughout our journey to create the best learning environment and improve pupil outcomes. We are proud to be a school that pupils now love to attend.
