The Department for Education's Education Estates Strategy: An Executive Summary
Following the recent announcements from the Department for Education, we are pleased to share an executive summary of the The Department for Education's (DfE) Education Estate Strategy, together with key considerations for Responsible Bodies.
The document distils the full 52-page strategy into a clear overview of the DfE’s strategic direction. It highlights the principal initiatives and programmes intended to deliver the strategy and outlines the practical implications for estate management, compliance and long-term planning.
While many of the policies and programmes referenced have been announced previously, the strategy brings them together within a structured long-term framework. In doing so, it provides greater clarity on how national programmes, funding streams and guidance are intended to operate together, while strengthening accountability for delivery.
Key announcements include:
Launch of the DfE digital service - Manage Your Education Estate
A new approach to condition data collection, moving away from centralised DfE programmes towards greater collaboration with Responsible Bodies
Replacement of the Condition Improvement Fund (CIF) from 2028
Introduction of a School Estate Management Annual Return, expected in autumn this year
Launch of a Renewal and Retrofit Programme designed to bridge the gap between maintenance funding and full rebuilding
Overall, the strategy recognises the scale of challenge facing the education estate and sets out an ambitious programme of reform. Its success will depend on effective delivery, sustained funding and the active role of Responsible Bodies, who will be central to implementation.
