A practical guide to understanding the School Estate Management Standards, identifying priorities and strengthening estate management.

Enabling responsible bodies to proactively manage their estates is a core strategic pillar of the Department for Education's Estate Strategy, published in February 2026.

The School Estate Management Standards are the Department for Education's principal guidance for effective and strategic estate management. Responsible bodies are required to submit an annual return demonstrating how they are meeting the standards, making a clear understanding of their purpose and practical application essential.

This guide provides a practical overview of the standards, highlighting the key requirements and considerations to help responsible bodies strengthen governance, improve planning and embed effective estate management.

eBook: The School Estate Management Standards

Published in April 2025, the standards cover 11 core areas of estate management, from strategic estate management and maintenance through to health and safety, fire safety, asbestos, sustainability and digital technology, with four levels of implementation ranging from baseline requirements through to advanced practice.

This eBook provides a clear overview of the key requirements at each level, along with practical considerations and top tips to help responsible bodies understand the expectations of the standards, identify gaps in current arrangements and prioritise areas for improvement.

The annual return is not intended to be a one-off compliance exercise. The standards provide a framework for developing more effective, proactive and strategic approaches to managing the school estate.
