Start preparing now for SCA projects

The School Condition Allocation (SCA) is annual funding for eligible Multi Academy Trusts (MATs) to maintain and improve the condition of school buildings and grounds.

For projects funded with SCA, starting the tendering process early in the year can be highly advantageous. Early planning allows capital projects - such as repairs, refurbishments, expansions, and infrastructural improvements - to coincide with the summer break reducing interference with the school's daily operations.

Engaging in the tendering process sooner rather than later not only improves the chances of securing preferred contractors but also positions you to negotiate more favourable terms. Contractors tend to have greater flexibility when approached during quieter times early in the year.

What SCA clients can do now

With funding in place, SCA clients need to allocate spending and start applying for planning permission, so that they can put work out to tender.

1. Commission a Condition Survey

A condition survey is a comprehensive assessment of the current state of the school's buildings and facilities. It helps identify what work is needed to maintain buildings, understand what this will cost and how to prioritise the work. You may already have a condition survey, if so, it is worth considering they should be repeated every five years. If not, now is the time to prepare this key document, so that you can allocate spending to projects effectively.

At Surveyors to Education, our condition surveys include recommendations for remedial works or replacements together with full costings. Our team of RICS chartered surveyors have helped many schools and academies assess their condition requirements and prioritise their SCA funding. This expertise and experience make us a valuable partner in your preparation process.

2. Submit Planning Applications

Planning permission is a fundamental step in the process of implementing your capital projects. It may be required for the change of use of an existing building or land, alteration or refurbishment of a building, or construction of a new building. Applying for planning permission can be a long process, so it is important to start early if you would like to undertake building work over the summer holidays.  Regulations around requirements for planning permission can be complex, we can help you determine whether it is needed, and support you through the process.
