The DfE has recently announced a T-level fund of £38 million which will be made available to support selected schools in making sure that they have high quality equipment and facilities in order to deliver the new T-levels qualifications from 2020.

The deadline to submit bids for T-level funding is 17 April 2019.

What are T-levels?

T-levels are a new technical study programme set to follow GCSEs from September 2020. The new option will offer a 2-year course tailored around skills that sit within 15 industry routes. They are designed to be offered as an alternative to A-levels and apprenticeships and will be delivered through a mixture of classroom learning and ‘on-the-job’ experience with an industry placement of at least 45 days.

Students will be able to take T-levels in a variety of subject areas ranging from accountancy to catering or even onsite construction. For a full list of subject areas and more information about the new T-levels, please click here.

Initially there will be 3 T-levels available at selected colleges and schools. The first courses will be in:

  • Digital production, design and development

  • Design, surveying and planning

  • Education

Structure of a T-level

T-levels are currently being developed as a partnership between employers, educational providers and the Department of Education. They will be of the same standard as the current apprenticeships on offer and will be approved by the Institute of Apprenticeships and Technical Education (The Institute).

T-level courses will have the following compulsory elements:

  • a technical qualification

  • an industry placement with an employer

  • minimum standard in Maths and English (if not already achieved)

The Government has recently selected the first set of schools able to offer the T-levels from September 2020. For a full list of these, please click here.
